What do you think about this quote?
I came across an interesting quote today and wanted to share it with the parents of our students.
“Should we not be putting all our emphasis on reading, writing and math? The ‘back-tobasics curricula,’ while it has merit, ignores the most urgent void in our present system – absence of self-discipline. The arts, inspiring – indeed requiring – self-discipline, may be more ‘basic’ to our nation survival than traditional credit courses. Presently, we are spending 29 times more on science than on the arts, and the result so far is worldwide intellectual embarrassment.”
– Paul Harvey – syndicated radio show host
I definately support all areas of education and think teaching the whole child is important. This quote got me thinking about not only the back to basics curriculum but also the huge STEM movement that is starting to be talked about in communities and how VH1 and some other organizations think adding the arts to STEM might be more beneficial for students. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. By adding A to the other 4 you would create a whole child by adding creativity, expression, and a whole brain approach to learning.
What are your thoughts? Is STEM better than STEAM? Is STEAM better than STEM? Are the basics the most important part?
