Four District Two students recently learned there was truth in the old saying, ‘good things come to those who wait.’
Very good things, in fact.
Angel Orozco (Sierra High School) and Carlos Cielo, Estevan Deboer, and Ana Palacios (all of Harrison High School) were awarded with Daniels Fund Scholarships in a surprise announcement March 27.
The students’ patience paid off after beginning the lengthy scholarship application process late last summer.
Orozco is the first Sierra student to receive the Daniels scholarship since 2009.
Cielo, Deboer, and Palacios are the first Harrison High School recipients since the school had four in 2016.
A total of eight D2 students, four from each high school, were named as finalists for the scholarship in February.
The Daniels Fund Scholarship provides full college tuition to any accredited nonprofit college or university in the United States, and is open to high school seniors in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming.
This year, only 238 winners were selected out of 2,250 applicants.
Recipients must demonstrate character, leadership, and a commitment to serving their communities along with financial need in order to be considered.
