Degrees and Certifications:
Mrs. Jana Thomas and Mr. Aaron Vandewarker
Dear Turman families,
I am looking forward to returning for the 2020-2021 school year as the principal at Turman Elementary School. My name is Jana Thomas, and this will be my 17th year working for Harrison School District #2. I received my bachelor’s degree from the University of Northern Colorado and my master’s degree from Argosy University out of Denver. I spent twelve years as a classroom teacher, teaching all grades K-5. I was also a literacy coach for two years before moving into administration.
I am originally from western Nebraska but have lived in Colorado for over twenty years with my husband. We have two daughters; one will be a senior and the other will be a freshman, both at Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction. As a family, we enjoy camping, hiking, and playing board games. I also enjoy reading, scrapbooking, and gardening when time allows.
I have loved being at Turman for the past three years working with the amazing staff and getting to know all the wonderful students and families. Next year is bound to bring new challenges, but I am excited for the opportunity to problem solve as we continue to work to meet the needs of our students and families. We will continue to work on building strong relationships and giving students the strong start they need to be successful with wherever life may take them.
Jana Thomas, Principal
Hello Turman families,
The 2020-2021 school year will be my 16th year in education. I have held positions as a paraprofessional, special education teacher, general education classroom teacher, and administration. This is my third year as Assistant Principal at Turman Elementary school and I am fortunate to serve with such a dedicated and talented staff.
I graduated from Biola University with a B.S. in Psychology and a minor in Biblical Studies. My licensure for teaching was completed through UCCS and I completed my MA degree through the University of Kansas, Lawrence. I was born and raised in southern California but have lived in Colorado Springs since 2002. My wife of 10 years is a Colorado native, former 4th-grade teacher, and currently substitute teaches. Our daughter will be going into 5th grade this coming year.
We enjoy bike rides, hikes, reading, playing at the park, and family road trips. Through the pandemic, we have had to redefine family time and work but we are doing the best we can to get it figured out. I am thankful for the Harrison community and the compassion and dedication to serving our kiddos!!
Aaron Vandewarker, Assistant Principal
