Turman’s core program of instruction includes 120 minutes of daily ELA instruction – with an emphasis on balanced literacy, students focus on reading and writing across the curriculum, utilization of Science and Social Studies text sources, strategic use of technology resources, and deployment of interactive read-aloud's shared reading and shared writing. Blocks of differentiated instruction through the use of Guided Reading and Literacy Intervention ensure students receive 45 minutes daily of literacy instruction and address all five areas of literacy within a homogeneous setting. This model has proven to be an effective strategy for ensuring that our primary students are reaching critical early literacy benchmarks and that the school meets Read Act requirements. Differentiation also is provided during intervention blocks, employing a TIER II Intervention of Leveled Literacy Intervention program to complement our TIER I focus on Guided Reading. Students receive 75-90 minutes daily of mathematics instruction in both whole and small groups. Eureka Math and Think-Through Math are our TIER I and TIER II curriculum.
