Mill Levy Override

Announcement

We are thrilled to share some fantastic news—4A has passed for our district! This monumental decision by our community reflects their trust and commitment to the future of our schools. The approved mill levy increase will provide additional property tax revenue for the next ten years, empowering us to make significant investments in District 2.

This funding allows us to:

  • Offer competitive pay for our teachers, ensuring we attract and retain the best educators.
  • Sustain the D2 Promise Program, which provides free community college for D2 graduates.
  • Enhance educational resources across all our schools, fostering even greater opportunities for our students.

As we celebrate this progress, please know we remain dedicated to supporting and uplifting every student, adapting to changes, and staying proactive to ensure the best outcomes for our schools. Our commitment to creating welcoming, inclusive, and supportive environments remains at the heart of all we do.

We deeply appreciate your unwavering dedication to our students and the D2 community. Your support is the cornerstone of their success, and together, we will continue to make a profound impact on their lives.

Thank you for being an integral part of this journey!

The D2 Board of Education has referred a question to the November 2024 Mail-In Ballot, asking voters to pass a mill levy override, which will expire after ten years. The Board has determined that mill levy funding is needed for ongoing education costs not covered by D2’s general fund from the state of Colorado.

What Is A Mill Levy Override? A mill levy override is a voter-approved property tax measure to fund local schools.

What Are Mills? The money generated from a mill tax stays in our community and goes directly to the school district. One mill means $1 is charged for each $1,000 assessed value on a homeowner’s property.

What Specifically Will This Mill Levy Support?

  • Retaining high-quality teachers by paying a competitive salary and benefits package with neighboring school districts.
  • Providing two years of free college (with direct admission) at Pikes Peak State College for all D2 graduates.
  • Improving D2’s charter schools (Atlas Schools, James Irwin Charter Schools, The Vanguard School).

Why Is D2 Asking For This Mill Levy? Research shows that high-quality teachers are the most significant factor in a student’s success, and this mill levy will provide the funds necessary to ensure D2 can retain highly effective teachers. In addition, D2 believes that eliminating barriers to college will increase college attendance for our graduates and equip them with the degrees or certifications they need to earn a living wage. Finally, a portion of the funds requested are dedicated to D2’s charter schools because those that serve D2 families are significantly underfunded.

Will Everyone Pay These Mills? Homeowners will pay mills, and renters could see their rent increase because their landlords will pay mills on their properties.

When is the Election? Election Day is November 5, 2024. Ballots will be mailed to all active registered voters on Monday, October 14, 2024. Colorado is a mail-in ballot state; registered voters do not have to go to the polls to vote.
