The Custodial department consists of 20 building engineers, 48 custodians, and 8 rovers who maintain the cleanliness of over 1,754,668 square feet of interior space that spans 20 schools and 8 district buildings. We provide routine cleaning and sanitization on a daily basis, consistent floor care, and specialized deep cleaning throughout the year. While each position looks slightly different at the elementary, middle or high school level, the general functions remain the same.
Building Engineers are responsible for the daily upkeep of their building. This includes, but is not limited to, performing daily/weekly/monthly safety compliance checks, bi-annual filter replacement, assisting with the set up and take down of school functions, post breakfast and lunch cleaning of the cafeteria, general maintenance of sprinklers, and providing weed control. Each building engineer supervises their school's custodians and rovers, and verifies the completion of assigned work on a daily basis.
Custodians are the primary workers who maintain each building's cleanliness. They are always on the lookout for safety concerns and immediately report them to their supervisor. Custodians focus on cleaning and sanitizing restrooms, sweeping and mopping floors/hallways, and trash removal. They also assist with the set up and take down of school functions, end of the day cafeteria cleaning, and other projects as assigned.
Rovers are the traveling custodians who support multiple elementary schools on a daily basis. Under the assumption that it takes 12 hours to clean an elementary school, rovers work four (4) hours at one location and then four (4) hours at a second location. By cleaning an assigned portion of the school, they are able to support the 8-hour custodian in cleaning the entire building.
Together, we strive to provide the best possible learning environment by maintaining clean facilities for our scholars, staff, and visitors.
