On May 2nd, the Panorama Gold Concert Choir participated in the Music in the Parks Festival in Denver. The group won a superior rating from the judges and brought home two shiny trophies to add to their collection.
The first trophy was for first place musical achievement in their division (Middle School Mixed Choirs from schools with a population of 750 or less). The second trophy was the Music in the Parks "Esprit de Corps," given to only one group in attendance! This award is in recognition of exemplary attitude, positive support of others, a spirit of cooperation and the display of the highest level of responsible behavior.
Panorama was one of 26 choirs and bands from three states who participated in the festival. The 60-student Gold Concert Choir is a balanced mix of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders and is lead by Sylvia Summers, who has served nine years as choir teacher at Panorama and has dedicated 28 years as an educator in Harrison District Two.
The choir performed "Cantar" by Jay Althouse, "Hashivenu" by John Leavitt, and "Joshua" by Kirby Shaw.
This most recent performance marks the third time Panorama's choir has performed in this particular event (other appearances were in 2001 and 2004). Similar events the group has participated in include a park festival in Breckenridge (2006) and a noncompetitive festival through Manhattan Concert Productions (2007). In February 2007, the choir sang as part of the National Children's Chorus under the direction of Grammy award winner Mary Alice Stollak at the Boettcher Concert Hall in Denver and the group was required to audition for participation in the event.
